27-year-old actor chosen unanimously as king for the Viagem Medieval
After ten years of captivating the audience The Viagem Medieval em Terra de Santa Maria has announced Sérgio Oliveira as the actor who will portray King Afonso V, the central figure of the upcoming edition of the historical reenactment in Santa Maria da Feira. After a decade of captivating performances that have won over the event’s audience in both large and medium-scale shows, the 27-year-old actor was introduced as the unanimous choice.
Sérgio Oliveira admits that he always believed the invitation would eventually come, but didn’t expect it to be this year, which is why he didn’t hesitate for a moment. “I immediately said yes; it’s a huge opportunity for me,” he shared.
After ten years of thrilling crowds at the Santa Maria da Feira historical reenactment, particularly in the large-scale 21h:30 performance, Sérgio Oliveira’s selection as king for the next edition of the Medieval Journey was unanimous among the project’s team.
Graduated in Theatre and Performing Arts from UTAD (University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro), Sérgio Oliveira is a professional actor deeply involved in the cultural scene of Santa Maria da Feira. For several years, he has been an active member of ACAL – Cultural and Artistic Association, and is a well-known face at the Medieval Journey, where he is admired, cherished, and acclaimed by many.
He played leading roles in unforgettable productions such as “Pedro and Inês” in 2017, which moved and enchanted audiences, and “From Love to Vengeance” in 2018, a powerful and intense performance that left a lasting impression. Another memorable moment was his participation in the reenactment of the Royal Courts, held in the Main Hall of the City Hall.
In 2023, Sérgio directed a show for the Viagem Medieval for the first time — a milestone he remembers fondly. He doesn’t forget where it all started, nor the people who walked with him along the way, especially the ACAL team and director Ramos Costa, who passed away in December of that same year.
Sérgio Oliveira is known as a driven and passionate performer. While his talent is widely recognized, it is his commitment, focus, and full dedication — body and soul — that truly stand out, ever since his early days in theatre at the Colégio Internato dos Carvalhos.
“Dedication” is exactly what the actor promises to bring to this edition of the Viagem Medieval, expected to be a particularly beautiful and meaningful one, as it will portray a rich part of local and national history, deeply connected to the Land of Santa Maria.
Afonso V earned his place in history with the title “The African”, after conquering the North African cities of Alcácer Ceguer, Anafa, Arzila, and Tangier. He was also the monarch who created the County of Feira, granting the title to Rui Pereira, lord of the Land of Santa Maria and its Castle. His long reign of 49 years was marked by conquests, succession disputes, and court intrigues — all of which will serve as inspiration for 12 days of entertainment and historical reenactments. Organized by the Câmara Municipal de Santa Maria da Feira, the municipal company Feira Viva and the Federação das Coletividades de Cultura e Recreio do Concelho, the 28th edition of the XXVIII Viagem Medieval em Terra de Santa Maria will take place from July 30 to August 10, in the historic center of Santa Maria da Feira.
